sleep and weight lossIf you’re on a mission to lose some excess weight you’ve been carrying around for too long, one particular aspect of your lifestyle that you must take into account is your sleep habits. Sleep is going to be paramount for success as without it, a number of negative side effects can occur.

Let’s walk you through some of the problems associated with not getting sufficient sleep at night so that you can see for yourself why getting enough in is a must.

Sleep And Your Metabolic Rate

First and foremost, you need to realize the fact that without sufficient sleep, your metabolism will start to slow.

Since your metabolism is going to be responsible for how many calories you burn up on a day to day basis, the faster it’s moving along, the better your progress will be.

Lack of sleep will make weight loss move along far more slowly than it has to.

Sleep And Insulin Sensitivity

Next, also consider the impact of sleep on insulin sensitivity.

Insulin sensitivity refers to how will your cells will respond to insulin when it’s released in your system.

Those who have poor insulin sensitivity are more likely to store excess body fat than those with good insulin sensitivity, so here again, it’s important that you keep yours up there.

The more sleep you get at night, the better your insulin sensitivity will tend to be.

Sleep And Energy Levels

Moving along, sleep is also going to influence your energy levels to quite a high degree as well.

You’ve likely experienced this before after a night of not much sleep at all.

You wake up feeling exhausted and like not doing much other than lying right back down.

If you’re not getting sufficient sleep, chances are you won’t be feeling like doing much in the way of exercise.

And since exercise is one element that is critical to success, this isn’t something to be overlooking.

Effect on Testosterone Levels and Function

A lack of sleep has shown a direct correlation on the levels of testosterone your body is producing. With a lack of testosterone comes all sort of problems, including a lack of muscle growth, energy levels, and even mood.

Supplements like Testofuel can help, but the best thing you can do is eat right, get plenty of exercise, and refrain from drinking or smoking as they have a tendency to affect testosterone levels as well.

Sleep And Hunger

Finally, the last big connection that you need to know is how sleep will influence hunger. When you’re not sleeping enough, your body is going to seek out fuel because it senses you’re fatigued when really, fuel is not what you need at this point – more sleep is.

Since your body knows that simple carbohydrates are also the fastest source of fuel it could possibly take in, this is what you’ll crave.

If you’ve ever had those days after not much sleep where it seems like you just can’t stop eating, this is precisely why – your body is seeking out carbohydrates to try and overcome the fatigue you feel.

So as you can see, sleep is not something to take lightly.

Those who get more sleep on a day to day basis almost always maintain lower body weights than those who don’t, so start making a serious effort to get your eight hours each night.

If you struggle to get a sound sleep during the evening, you may also want to consider looking into a sleep aid such as Alteril as well, which is well tolerated in almost everyone unlike many sleep aids out there.

    1. Hey Ray,
First off, sign up for my free “Get Ripped” ebook. It’s packed with tons of info on diet and exercise, including a “cheat sheet” of the foods you should be eating. As far as supplements, you would likely benefit from a stack called the Crazy Mass cutting stack. It will help not only with building lean muscle mass, but also can help produce sexual stamina.

  2. Hi Rob, I am a 36 year old male, 6 foot tall weighing 13 and a half stone. I work 12 hours a day and have free weights at home that I use 3-4 times a week.

I do not have a great physique but do regular heavy lifts. I was wondering if Testofuel would be good for me?

I take ON platinum hydro, l-glutamine and creatine. Thanks for any advice/tips Rob.

    All the best mate!
    1. Hey Wayne,

If you’re looking for something to boost your energy, mood, and libido, while helping improve your lean muscle mass to fat ratio, then yes, TestoFuel is a good fit for you, and it will stack well with what you’re already taking. You’re right about at that age when this kind of testosterone booster starts be needed.

  3. Hi Rob,
My wife is trying to lose weight as well and its a constant battle for her to stay awake and wake up. she usually gets about 8- 10 hours of sleep and she still feels grawgy at times. There are times when she misses meals but when she does eat, she feels full pretty quickly.

Shes tried lipozene but she wasn’t able to stick with it. She also isn’t really able to get much exercise either since we don’t have the money to get the equipment, shes an introvert, and the weather is starting to provide pretty harsh conditions.

    Any advise?
    1. Hey Zachary

Diet and exercise are really the keys to real and lasting weight loss. I’ve written an ebook about how to “get ripped.” It’s filled mainly with workouts and meal plans. It’s geared toward building muscle, but you’ll find lots of stuff that translates easily to weight loss. Download it for free here. As for supplements, I find Phen375 really works.

  4. Hi, I am a truck driver and I work 14-16 hours a day, well a night actually. I was curious if the fact that I sleep during the day would have any negative effects on me?

I personally prefer the night shift and find I get a better sleep during the day even tho I often don’t get as many hours in bed when running night shifts.

Also I have recently bought a exercise bike and have been trying to put about 30 min on the bike before and after work. I have heard that working out right before bed can be a bad thing would I be better off to do one long session right when I wake up before I head to work or continue with 2 shorter sessions before and after?

    1. Hey Andrew,
The negative effects for day sleepers are more about not getting enough hours of uninterrupted sleep than about the actual time of day. If you make sure you’re getting good sleep (and it sounds like you do), that’s what matters.

As for the 2 shorter workout sessions, there’s no downside, and recent studies have actually shown that it may be better than one long workout. Working out improves blood circulation and raises metabolism for some time even after the workout is finished.

By working out twice, you’re getting that benefit twice. Sounds like you’re doing just fine.
