There’s a huge surge of Nootropics supplements coming to the market lately, and I have been personally overwhelmed with review requests. This market literally seemed to take off overnight, and it is quickly emerging as one of the fastest growing segments of the supplements market. One supplement I recently got a chance to test out is called Phenibut XT, which is the focus of this review. The makers of this supplement, Serious Nutrition Solutions, sent me a sample pack of 6 capsules to test out, that of which I just finished testing.

As always, if you would like to skip to the nitty gritty details of my results with Phenibut XT, then just Click Here .

What is Phenibut XT?

phenibut xt review and results

Labeled as an all natural nootropic supplement, Phenibut XT is intended to help promote relaxation, support your overall mood, and induce restful sleep. It does this through the use of only one ingredient that goes by the same name. The chemical compound is officially called beta-phenyl-gamma-aminobutyric, which is actually a derivative of the naturally occuring inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA.

One capsule of Phenibut XT contains 500 mg, and typical daily doses can go as high as 2000 mg (4 capsules), although it’s recommended you start off with one pill to assess your tolerance.

Here’s a snapshot of the ingredients label:

phenibut xt ingredients label

Since I take alot of nootropics that have stimulants in them, I noticed I was having difficulty sleeping at night. I would often lie awake for hours after turning the lights off, and some nights I would wake up several times. I tried taking a wide variety of sleep aids, and while they would often put me to sleep easily, I would often wake up the next day feeling groggy and tired throughout the day.

When I saw that Phenibut XT was a nootropic supplement that helped to support restful sleep, I figured why not give it a shot. Since I’ve never taken phenibut before, I decided to take 1 capsule (500mg / .5 g) around 7:30 pm, which is about 3 1/2 hours before my usual bedtime. I “feel” as though I started feeling the effects within the first 15 min., but that might have been a placebo effect.

About an hour into it I had a “slight” dizzy / light headed feeling when I got up too fast, but that quickly wore off. I did start to notice I felt very calm and relaxed, but not to the point where I was drowsy or falling asleep (which, I might add, is very difficult to NOT do in my giant recliner). A few hours later I made my way upstairs and started reading a book.

Within about 10 minutes I started to get pretty tired and decided to turn in for the night. If I had to guess, it took me about 15 min. to fall asleep but I ended up waking up once through the night (around 3 am) to take a piss. I fell back asleep with no problems, and woke up feeling great. However, about 3 hours later I started to hit a wall and got pretty tired/foggy. I decided to up the dosage the next night to 2 capsules.

On the 2nd day, I decided to take 1 capsule at around 5:30 pm on an empty stomach. Mind you I was in sort of a bad mood for most of the day, feeling mostly sluggish and unable to get any work done. About an hour after taking it I noticed a significant improvement in my mood, and overall just felt more relaxed. It felt like it was starting to wear off about 3 hours after taking that first capsule, so I decided to take another one at around 8:30.

Keep in mind that the “supposed” half-life for Phenibut is about 5 hours, which basically means every 5 hours the supplements potency is cut in half.

The “feel good” feeling returned and this time stuck around for much longer. I went to bed around 11:30 pm and ended up waking around 8:30 am, and I gotta say I felt GREAT! The effects seemed to last through most of the day without even taking another pill, which was a plus.

I decided to take another 2 capsules later on that evening and felt the same effects. At this point I was down to 1 pill, and figured it probably wouldn’t do much to take it so I decided to just let it wear off and see if there was any come down effects. Surprisingly, I didn’t feel any major crash or anything, and my mood was pretty well enhanced for most of the weekend.

Phenibut XT Vs. Other Brands

I’ve been testing out a lot of different brands of Phenibut to see which one works the best. In theory, they should all work the same, right? Well, what I noticed was some brands worked great, while others I got practically no effect.

absorb your health phenibutOne recent one I tried is sold by a company called AbsorbYourHealth.com. They specialize in selling a wide variety of nootropic supplements, and have a GREAT reputation of providing high quality products.

I gave it a shot and the effects we TREMENDOUSLY different when compared to Phenibut XT. Because it is sold in powder form instead of capsules, you’re able to control the dose a bit more accurately then with the capsules of phenibut xt.

Sure, you can break open the capsules, but if you don’t have a scale it’s tough to estimate how much you’re taking. AbsorbYourHealth.com includes a small 500 mg scoop with all their orders, so it’s a bit easier to eyeball how much you’re taking.

Combine it with a cognitive enhancer like Optimind and the result will be the closest thing to adderall that I have ever come across.

Phenibut XT WARNING – Recent Side Effects

So, originally when I posted this review, I had only decided to take the supplement for a total of 3 days, which is close to the manufacturers recommendation of a 5 days on, 2 days off cycle. After casually reading through some other forums out there about using Phenibut XT for an extended period of time, I decided to try a 10 day long experiment.

Now, I realize this is against Phenibut XT’s recommendation, as was evident by the warning on the label.

how to take phenibut xt

but other users were reporting better nootropic success with a longer duration of supplementation.

This time around I started off with a 500 mg dose first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. I waited about an hour before I ate anything and took another capsule about 3 hours later. Later on in the evening (I guess around 6 pm or so), I took another 500 mg. I actually did this for about 3 days straight, and the nootropic effects were ENORMOUS.

I got a great nights sleep and felt invigorated in the morning, but I also felt a HUGE surge in productivity and focus. I felt like I could accomplish very mundane tasks in a very short period of time, and often happily doing work I would normally consider very boring. However, this is when the comedown started to kick in…

When I first started taking Phenibut XT I didn’t realize the full withdrawal potentials, until now. Here I am, about 10 days in and 18 total grams consumed, and I feel freakin weird, mainly in a bad way. After last Sunday, I decided to take the rest of the week off from Phenibut to “retrain my system”. I didn’t take any on Monday, and to be honest, I felt totally fine.

phenibut xt side effectsThere was no afterglow effect which I had read about on various forums, but I didn’t feel like I was withdrawing from anything. Later on that evening I got into bed, and fell asleep relatively easily. About 4 am, I wake up to take a piss, and feel COMPLETELY and UTTERLY disorientated. Now, mind you, I have blackout shades in my bedroom which effectively “shut out” all light sources. But, I have NEVER, EVER felt like this before.

I take my piss, get back into bed, and literally just laid there completely wide awake. After about an hour of tossing and turning, I just decided “what the hell, I might as well get up”. I felt weird, almost in a trance like state. Too tired to stay awake, but unable to fall asleep. Truly an uncomfortable experience…a condition known as insomnia if you never heard of it 🙂

A few hours later I decided to take 1 500 mg capsule in an effort to “take the edge off”, and within hours was actually feeling pretty good. I didn’t experience the mental fog I had in the morning, and things seemed to be getting better throughout the day. That night, I got to sleep relatively easily, but again woke up at 4 am, right on the nose. What woke me up? I had a nightmare, and all I remember was that I was pissing blood…yeah, that’s not good. This time, however, I was lucky and fell back asleep relatively quickly.

The next day (Wednesday), I was heading down to a local car dealership to pick up a car to test drive for a few hours, and I had a sense of anxiety kind of creep over me. I don’t normally feel anxious, in fact I’m usually a very level headed guy, but it was an inescapable feeling.

A feeling of dread, almost. I picked up the car and drove around for a bit, feeling fine when not in a social situation (like a car dealership).

I got home, went onto my computer to do some quick research on the car, and decided “WTF, let me take another 500 mg”. After all, in about 2 hours I would probably be negotiating a new car, so I didn’t want to be social awkward or anxious. Buying a car is anxious enough, I didn’t need it to be worsened.

An hour or so later I felt completely fine, back to the same old talkative guy I normally am, utterly and totally socially-free.

As I type this, it’s 2:30 am (Thursday)….I am NEVER up this late, and haven’t been for years. I can’t sleep because every time I lay down and am just about to fall asleep, I jerk myself awake and end up staring at the ceiling for the next hour.

I’ve decided I’m going to go cold-turkey off of this stuff, which from all the research I’ve been doing is probably the best way to go. From what I’ve read, tapering off with lower doses just seems to extend the withdrawal symptoms. I have no one to blame but myself, because I simply didn’t follow the instructions on the label or from what I researched.

I’m sure it will pass soon, and I hope it does so pretty damn quickly! I will try to update this again in a few days to let everyone know how it turned out.

Where Can You Buy Phenibut XT?

Recommendation

If you DO decide to try out Phenibut XT, I would recommend you follow the dosing schedule in the infographic below.

how to take phenibut infographic

If your in the market for something that helps improve the quality of your sleep and make you feel more relaxed, then Phenibut XT is definitely worth a try. It’s cheap enough to not break the bank, and based on my own personal results I think it can work great. I would recommend that you only take this on an “as needed” basis to avoid building a tolerance, and be sure to take the equivalent time off as long as you are on it. By that I mean if you take it for 3 days straight, then you should take off for 3 days straight before taking any more. Don’t be an idiot like me and take it for more then a few days without taking a PROPER break.

Is that a barbiturate -Joshua

It's not. It's got some similar properties, but it's a derivative of GABA and while it relaxes you, it doesn't cause drowsiness.- Rob

  1. Happy new year Rob.
We last spoke in June I think.

I’m at one capsule a day of Kavinace Ultrapm for the las 2-3 months. I also take 3-6 mcgs Melatonin each night.

I sleep pretty well but I have no energy, have more anxiety during the day, some depression and just overall blah. If you remember I was taking 2 caps daily for 2-3 years.

I think this stuff is absolutely debilitating, even at their recommended dosage. What would the symptoms be and how long would they last if I cold turkey the KavUltrapm at this point?

And if I did, would you recommend still using the melatonin, or quit it also at the same time? Can you notify my email when you respond?

    1. Hey Jeff,
Good to hear from you again. Yeah that’s the problem with Kaviance (Phenibut)…it starts off leaving you feeling great, but slowly creeps up on you and makes things worse than before. To answer your question, it’s tough to give you an accurate answer unfortunately.

Some guys have severe withdrawals after using for a period of 1 – 2 years, some barely feel anything, and some are a mix of both. Since you knocked down your dose to 1 capsule and are feeling the effects (anxiety, depression, etc.), you will likely feel it for quite some time.

What I would do is a slow taper. So either take a half capsule everyday for about 2 – 3 weeks, and then quit cold turkey, or take 1 capsule every other day. The former (half capsule once a day) will be easier, but still leave you feeling a bit uncomfortable.

But don’t worry about it man, you’ll get through it. I’m convinced that Phenibut withdrawal is about 70% mental and 30% physical. I would definitely continue taking the Melatonin, and would even consider checking out Rest Up (http://www.RestUp.com) for insomnia issues.

It helped me out big time during a relatively recent Phenibut withdrawal. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions.
  2. I take 2 capsules of Kavinace Ultrapm each night, along with a 10mg melatonin pill Walgreens sells.
I started just taking liquid melatonin maybe 2 years ago, 5-10 mgs each night before bed.

Then somebody recommended the Ultra pm. Tried that and like it a lot better than the melatonin.

So I then started taking both each night. Long term what’s the downside of this?

    1. Hey Jeff,
There sholdn’t be any downside to taking both, but be VERY careful with the Kavinace. It has some SERIOUS addiction and withdrawal potential. I talk about it pretty thoroughly in my review, check it out here: https://www.supplementcritique.com/kavinace-review-my-personal-results/

If you’re looking for a powerful sleep aid, check out Alteril. I take it 2 – 3 times per week, and it’s the best sleep aid I’ve ever used. Here’s my review: https://www.supplementcritique.com/alteril-sleep-aid-real-review-and-results/

If you’re going to get off the Kavinace, contact me first. I’ll give you some helpful tips to lessen the withdrawal.
      1. Yeah, I’m running out of steam/motivation of a day by 4-5 pm and my work requires me to be on my game through the evening, 8-10pm. So I’m thinking I need to get off the Kavinace Ultrapm.

        Tips?
          1. Ok, what I would recommend you do is a VERY slow titration down from whatever dose you’re on. From what I remember, Kavinace comes in a powder / capsule formulation.

When you get down to one capsule a night, I would start by dumping out a small amount and taking that for 1 week. Then the next week, dump a little more out and take that for 1 week.

And so on and so forth. It should take you about 4 – 6 weeks to get off the stuff, and doing it the way I recommend will be WAY easier than just stopping cold turkey.

          2. Thanks Rob. Taking 2 each evening now.

I’ll start reducing the amount in the capsule starting today for this first week.
          3. Ok keep me posted and let me know if you have any issues. If you start to experience problems with falling / staying asleep you might want to check out a sleep aid called Rest Up. I’ve been using it on and off for the last 2 years or so, and it works great to alleviate insomnia related issues. Here’s their site – http://www.Restup.com
    1. Hey Sandi,
Well it really depends on a few factors, mainly how long you’ve been taking it. IF you’ve been taking it for any length of time (i.e. several weeks or months) then yes, I would DEFINITELY suggest you taper down.

If you’ve only taken it for a few nights then stopping cold turkey should be no problem.
    1. Hey Dashelle,
Phenibut would be great for this, but again, I would only recommend using it very infrequently (2 times a week max, with at least a 3 – 4 day break in between).

Have you tried any other medications?

        1. Prescription wise, there's a lot of options. You're best bet is to talk with your Dr. on that. If I were you, I would pick up some phenibut. Using it very sparingly (like for presentations, situations that make you feel awkward, etc.) it will likely be a GODSEND for you. Try it first on a day you don't have anything to do and see how you feel. It also takes a few hours to take full effect, so don't take it like 30 min. before a presentation thinking it will help. Check out the Absorb Your Health brand, it’s the best I’ve used to date. Here’s their site: https://www.absorbyourhealth.com/product/phenibut/?ref=4349

  3. Addiction potential is extreme. I have a history of substance abuse and have been clean for years.

I decided to see what this whole nootropics thing was all about, because it seemed too good to be true.

    It was.

The potential for abuse is very real. After taking it for weeks (the FIRST time) the withdrawals were incredible.

Using the two or three day recommended regimen is absolutely necessary. I should have been smart enough to know that my propensity for substance abuse would extend to ANY substance.

Once I started taking Phenibut, I couldn’t stop.

Please please PLEASE do not underestimate this product. I’m practically begging you.

The adverse effects from overuse are staggering, to say the least. I found that this product actually does deliver on its promises of increasing focus, aiding in restful sleep, and cognitive supplementation.

However if you have a history of sub abuse, avoid it. At all costs.

    Please.

    1. I agree, and some of the horror stories I’ve read about the withdrawal / addiction potential can keep you up at night. That’s why I make it VERY clear that you should use it very sparingly and at the lowest dose possible to avoid this.

Thanks for sharing your story Josh.
      Rob

  4. the effects you describe make this product sound like a barbiturate anxiety pill, or possibly a opiate. including the negative side effects and withdraw dependency you spoke of. in your experience, did you feel like you could operate normally during the day, or was the added focus because you got a good nights rest? It sounds like if I took this pill to ‘relax’ and ‘focus’ during the day it would impair my ability to operate machinery or drive.

    1. Hey John,

No, it never made me feel groggy when I took it. Only sometimes in the morning or when I hadn’t taken it.

When I used it in the daytime, I was very alert and productive.
